Mazda MX5 ND Luggage Rack
Revo-Rack Black C$589.95
Revo-Rack PA C$739.95
Revo-Rack is a completely new type of Mazda MX5 ND Luggage Rack that virtually eliminates the risk of paint damage, caused by steel clamps or straps on the trunk/deck lid edge. With the Revo-Rack trunk rack no metal touches your MX5 only soft rubber vacuum cups these use the pressure of the atmosphere to secure the rack to your Mazda's trunk. We manufacture the Revo-Rack ourselves and its available in either a black finish or a version thats hand polished then anodised to create a deep shine.
Revo-Rack attaches to your MX5 ND using vacuum cup technology, these are not suction cups. Suction is what creates vacuum. Vacuum is the total absence of air whereas suction is the process done to achieve a vacuum. The grey buttons on the side of the cups pump out the air creating a huge, securing force.
We designed Revo-Rack in 2015 when the ND was launched and its been in production ever since. The issue with fitting a conventional clamp based luggage rack to the ND/MK4 is the 2.7mm/0.106 inch panel gap - there is no room for a metal clamp.
We are of course aware that Mazda suggests a maximum load of 10kg for their carbon fibre rack on the MK4/ND because of the cars aluminium trunk lid. This clamps on a like a conventional rack with the weight of the rack and load spread over a very small area, approx 16 inches square ; the footprint of the clamps on the edge of the trunk.
With the Revo-Rack the load is spread over a much greater area over 300cm ; the footprint of the vacuum cups. Its spread load not a point load like a conventional rack, hence the Revo-Rack can carry a greater load ( 20kg/45lbs ) with no risk of damage to the trunk lid.
Revo-Rack has been independently safety tested by TUV Group. Along with braking, speed and lab testing to a loaded Revo-Rack one of the criteria for certification involves a 645N force test. A lifting force of around 65kg/145lbs for 10 minutes to a Revo-Rack with a 25kg load on it. ( shown below ) The Revo-Rack stayed secure and did not bend or deform. If attached properly Revo-Rack is as secure if not more secure than a traditional clamp rack. See the full test criteria here

The Rack Frame :
This Miata ND luggage rack is manufactured from 1" 6063-T5 tubing this is an aluminium and magnesium alloy ( it will never rust ) As a result the rack frame weighs only 3.6lb perfect for the ND's aluminium trunk lid. The cross bars are machine welded in place to ensure consistency, the rack is powder coated black or hand polished and anodised. The rack frame measures 36"x17"
This model of Revo-Rack is specific to the ND with the Sirius antenna. It is supplied with an additional hole in the frame to relocate the third vacuum cup to a cross rail and optional spacers to raise the rear of the rack so it lies level on the deck lid. This also helps to minimise any signal loss to the antenna and ensure the third brake light is still visible.
The Supports :
The rack is secured to your Miata's ND's trunk lid using three 5" vacuum cups, rated by the manufacturer as capable of holding an 18kg/40lb load each.
Vacuum cups employ the force of atmospheric pressure to grip a surface: When a vacuum exists between the cup and the surface on which it is attached, the weight of Earth's atmosphere holds the cup in place with incredible force. Unlike suction cups that produce a vacuum as they pull away from the surface, Revo-Racks vacuum cups use a hand-actuated pump to efficiently remove air from between the rubber pad and the attaching surface thus creating a much more reliable hold. Because the full face of the pad is brought into contact with the surface, distortion is reduced, allowing the cup to be used with very little risk of damage.
The Revo-Racks vacuum cup's pump feature a plunger with a red line, which serves as a vacuum indicator. Introduced in the1960's, this safety device is still recognized as one of the most reliable warning systems available. A few strokes of the plunger evacuate the vacuum pad, causing it to seal securely to the attaching surface. When the cup is attached completely, the plunger stops moving and the red line is hidden within the pump. A visible red line indicates if air has leaked back into the pad, making vacuum insufficient to use the cup. However, if the red line becomes visible while the cup is in use, a check valve allows the user to re pump the cup without losing the remaining vacuum.
Lifting on the release tab near the edge of the pad allows air to refill the evacuated space, so that the vacuum cup detaches completely. The racks sits 3" off the trunk lid
Huge shoutout to the people across the pond at Revo-Rack. They didn’t pay me or anything to endorse them, but the rack is honestly the best possible solution for adding storage capacity to the world’s favorite roadster. It left no marks and I am sure it would work well on other vehicles too. At around $300 the rack seemed expensive at first, but it worked flawlessly and even kept all that camping gear rock steady into triple digit speeds at one point. Plus it’s something that I’ll continue to use in the future.

We have just completed our second long road trip with the Revo-Rack on the MX-5. This time we did 3,800km, (2300 miles) mostly at high freeway speeds, but also plenty of curvy roads, and the rack held fast in all the wind blast and lots of lateral forces. Top up or top down, there was never a worry with the rack and luggage.
We couldn’t be happier with our purchase.
